What is The Whisperer Team

The Whisperer Team is a grassroots community focused on bringing local empathetic and compassionate helpers, known as Pub Whisperers and Community Whisperers , together, to have brave conversations and to save the lives of those suffering with suicide distress.

How do we do this?
When someone in suicide distress hands someone a GLASS EMPTY Signal coaster or puts their empty glass upside down and a coaster on its upturned base, its a sign they need help from someone to get them feeling safe again.

It's a way to start the chat around how they're feeling.

Connection is an important part of recovery from suicide distress. A Whisperer is here to help with a confidential and empathetic chat.

The pub, the bar: they're places where mates meet, beers are drunk and friendships are forged.

Wherever you are in the world, there's one word synonymous with them: connection.

It's a vibe, it's a place of fun, dance, revelry and conversations.

But what happens when someone in a pub is struggling?

When someone with suicide distress shows the signs they are suffering, and they are noticed by those around them, rather than look the other way or at them with fear and judgment (stigma), it's important to show compassion. The Pub (or Bar) Whisperer, which can be the publican or anyone working in the venue who can get someone suffering to safety, can have a quiet conversation with them.

If you're struggling with suicide distress, and the venue you're in has a GLASS EMPTY Signal poster on it's walls or coasters at the bar or on the tables, you can get to safety by finding out more about the GLASS EMPTY Suicide Prevention Signal here.

So you can help get the support you need.

If you're a Pub (or Bar) Whisperer, and you've noticed someone deploy the GLASS EMPTY Signal in your venue, but you and your staff are too busy to make a suicide intervention right now, you can spark a conversation, then suggest bringing into the venue a trusted family member, friend or colleague.

If that's not on the cards for them, you can contact a Community Whisperer in your area, or someone you know who has completed Mental Health First Aid Training or a certified Suicide Prevention program.

A Community Whisperer can be found anywhere community congregates and conversations can be shared.

Cafes, clubs, breweries, pubs and bars. Anywhere drinks are served. Even at barbers or on trade work sites... if these places are equipped to help.

If a suicide intervention is necessary, but a Pub Whisperer is too busy to assist, a Community Whisperer can be contacted during these busy periods to help get someone in distress to safety.
